The FGR opens investigation folder against Peña Nieto

The Attorney General’s Office (FGR) opened an investigation folder against former President Enrique Peña Nieto for alleged operations of illicit origin, the Financial Intelligence Unit (UIF) confirmed.
At least 15 people and companies would be involved in the transfers to the former president of Mexico.
The head of the UIF, Pablo Gómez, reported that a scheme was detected by which the former president allegedly benefited from more than 26 million pesos via international transfers.

“Derived from the powers of the Financial Intelligence Unit, an analysis of the financial reports and warnings of those who carry out vulnerable activities was carried out, through which a scheme was detected where a former president of the Republic obtained economic benefits,” he revealed.

In a press conference, the official explained that a relative transferred three amounts to Enrique Peña Nieto. The first in August 2019, for 16 million; the second in October 2021, for 5 million; and the last one in October 2021, for 5 million.
The transfers were made by a relative of the former president from an account in Mexico to Spain. According to the UIF, this person also carried out operations with a brother of the former president to whom he wrote checks for 29 million pesos.
“Of the deposits, cash receipt of 36 million euros stands out, they are relevant because, because they are cash operations, the source is not known. It was detected that the former president has links with two companies, in which financial irregularities were identified.”
Link with two companies
Likewise, the head of the UIF pointed out that Enrique Peña Nieto has corporate ties with two companies in which fiscal and financial irregularities were detected.
In one of the firms (company “A”), Peña Nieto has the status of shareholder, which he shares with relatives. This company was founded before Peña Nieto was elected president.
Company “B” was formed by Peña Nieto and family members before the Mexican was president. “It has a symbiotic relationship with a transnational morality that benefited from federal government contracts during the Peña Nieto administration.”
Company “B” was a service provider with Peña Nieto receiving resources of 10,533 million between 2013 and 2018. In addition, from 2015 to 2021 it sent 261 international transfers to the United States, Ireland and the United Kingdom.
Pablo Gomez said that the name of the companies is reserved because it is inside a research folder. “They are traders (the companies), the main turn of all of them is trade,” he said.
“The competing investigation folder has been delivered, the FGR has opened an investigation folder. The investigations are not in charge of the FIU, the FIU simply collects information,” said Pablo Gómez.
We are not going to fabricate crimes: AMLO
Meanwhile, President Andrés Manuel López Obrador commented that what was presented at the morning conference is not an accusation from the government of Mexico against the former president.
“These are matters of investigation, it is financial intelligence, it does not mean hiding anything, but acting responsibly. We are not going to fabricate crimes against anyone,” he said.
“It is not to go out and say ‘former President Peña is accused of money laundering’, no, there is information of operations that he carried out of 26 million pesos that he received from 2019 to date,” he reiterated.
