California Governor Signs Law Allowing Citizens to Sue Gun Holders

California Gov. Gavin Newsom on Friday signed a gun control law that would allow the state’s residents to sue gun manufacturers in the same way Texas allows its residents to take abortion providers to court.
“California will use every tool at its disposal to save lives, especially in the face of a Supreme Court with increasingly extreme positions,” Newsom said, referring to the latest decisions against abortion rights and gun regulation.
The Democratic governor had asked lawmakers in his party to respond with a law based on the model used by Texas.
The measure allows people to sue anyone who distributes illegal assault weapons, parts that can be used to make weapons and weapons without serial numbers, among other items.
“If they’re going to use this framework to put women’s lives at risk (in Texas), we’re going to use it to save people’s lives here in the state of California. That’s the spirit, the principle, behind this law,” Newsom said during the signing of the law in Los Angeles.
As part of challenging Texas Republican Gov. Greg Abbott “for refusing to protect human life and take action against gun violence,” Newsom said he had the text of the California law published in major Texas newspapers.
A legal battle over bans on assault weapons and high-capacity magazines in California could reach the U.S. Supreme Court in the coming months.
