“Ogú y Mampato en Rapa Nui” celebrates 20 years of its premiere being the first digital animation film in Chile.
A milestone in the history of national cinema is the one achieved in 2002 by the team of the production company “Cineanimadores”, directed by Alejandro Rojas, bringing to the big screen the adventures of the comic created by Themo Lobos.
“It’s something very symbolic for all the people who worked. We were all newbies. I remember her fondly for what we achieved, not knowing anything about how to make films.” This is how the filmmaker and director of the Digital Animation career of the Universidad Mayor, Alejandro Rojas, responds when asked about the premiere of “Ogú y Mampato en Rapa Nui”, which in 2002 became the first animated film made in Chile.
The film, which shows two of the most popular characters of the national comic, developed by the cartoonist Themo Lobos, reached international distribution, reaping awards in Colombia, Argentina and Mexico, in addition to being the representative of Chile in the Oscars of that year.
Regarding the advances of the Digital Animation industry in the country, the director comments: “I have had to witness the differences between the current industry and that of 20 or 30 years ago. Today there is a large number of professionals in Chile who are trained and who can consolidate a service for large foreign producers. At the University I realize that young people do projects with all their steps and already know how to create projects for foreign chains. It is a path that should be promoted because it generates a lot of employability and with a high level of demand,” says Rojas.
