UN: Six months of war in Ukraine mark ‘sad and tragic milestone’

The six months of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine represent a “sad and tragic milestone,” United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres told the Security Council.
“Today marks a sad and tragic milestone, (as it is) six months since Russia invaded Ukraine on February 24,” said Guterres, who also denounced the consequences of this “absurd war” that go “far beyond Ukraine.”
In particular, he reiterated “his deep concern” about military activities around the Zaporizhia nuclear power plant. “Any further escalation of the situation could lead to self-destruction,” he warned.
He also stressed the persistent threat to global food security after returning from a visit to Ukraine and Turkey that focused on Ukrainian cereal exports, which resumed thanks to an international agreement signed in July.
“In 2022 there is enough food in the world, the problem is its unequal distribution. But if we don’t stabilize the fertilizer market in 2022, there simply won’t be enough food in 2023.”
