Carlos Maldonado resigns from the Radical Party and expresses aspiration to form a new political space

The former president of the Radical Party, Carlos Maldonado, resigned on Monday from the collectivity. The former justice minister questioned the party for its “insufficiently debated” support for the Approval in the face of the constitutional plebiscite. He also expressed his aspiration for the creation of a new political space.
Recall that the Supreme Court of the Radical Party suspended Maldonado’s membership on September 2 for his support for the Rejection, an option contrary to that defined by the collectivity. The Rejection was imposed with ease in the constitutional plebiscite.

“I am not in favor of this uncritical permanence, and without real incidence of the Party, in a Government that, until now, has shown poor management, without real progress in the fulfillment of its program, and even further from responding to the main and urgent problems that afflict the citizens, in security, economy, public order, pensions, health, and education, among others,” Maldonado said in a letter.
On the other hand, he pointed out that he did not interpret the “insufficiently debated” support of the party to the Apruebo, “without leaving room for the freedom of conscience of the militants who had a different conviction, to a constitutional text that affected principles that radicalism has defended throughout its existence.”
In this line, he explained that “prominent representatives of the party clearly and publicly warned of the serious shortcomings of the text, receiving from the party institutions, instead of a serene reflection, calls for silence, and the threat, soon carried out, to open disciplinary proceedings against them, within the framework of which sanctioning measures were adopted, anticipation of trial, as was public knowledge in my case.”
“Strike, at this point, to point out that this constitutional text, officially supported by the party institutions, deserved an overwhelming rejection of the citizens, without having heard, until now, a serious self-criticism in this regard,” he added.
New political space
In the letter he also expressed his aspiration to the creation of a new political space.
“I leave with hope, the hope of serving more effectively the same principles, now since my independence, and with the expectation of contributing to the creation of a new political space, which interprets in a better way, and offers better answers, to a society that has evolved so much and has become so complex in recent decades,” he said.
“Without forgetting the pains, lessons or achievements of the past, those of us who share a progressive perspective have the duty to look forward, and update diagnoses and proposals for the challenges of the present and the future. Chile deserves it,” Maldonado added.

Today, with pain and hope, I have submitted my resignation to the @PRadicalcl

The resignation before SERVEL, and letter with my reasons, I have sent to the General Secretariat of the party, and I leave them here for public knowledge.
At this difficult time, I reiterate my affection and commitment to Chile pic.twitter.com/5R4Sz0pxvb
