Mario Delgado seeks to extend his leadership in Morena until 2024

The National Congress of Morena will vote on an agreement that will allow the current president of the party and the general secretary, Mario Delgado and Citlalli Hernández, to prolong their positions in the leadership until 2024, which will allow them to control the selection of the presidential candidacy.
Delgado confirmed in an interview that the proposal will be submitted for consideration by the approximately 3,000 congressmen who meet this day in a hall of Ciudad Deportiva, in the CDMX.
Originally, Delgado and Hernández were elected in October 2021 for a 3-year term, which ends in 2023.

The Moreno president said that the intention to extend his mandate by one year is so as not to distract the party in an internal struggle in the period in which the presidential candidacy must be defined.
The new proposal contradicts previous statements by Delgado and Hernández, in which they maintained that they would leave their positions within the term for which they were elected.

“We could not make that noise that we were going to an election process of the president of the party, in the middle of the process of selecting candidates,” heading to the #Elecciones2024. pic.twitter.com/Yn7srXbreP

“There is a proposal to extend the validity of the presidency and the general secretariat until 2024, because we could not put that noise that we went to a process of election of president of the party in the middle of the process of 2024,” Delgado said.
“Until after the election we will have to lead the Executive Committee that is elected today throughout the 2024 process. We will have to go through the entire selection process of the candidate for 2024.”
Delgado added that, as part of the reforms to the Party Statute that will be voted on today, it is established that the presidential candidacy will be chosen through polls.
War of batons in Morena
Two of the four candidates for Morena’s presidential candidacy went to the third National Congress of the party, and, with them, their batons.
The meeting was attended by the head of the Government of Mexico City, Claudia Sheinbaum, and the Secretary of the Interior, Adán Augusto López.
Foreign Minister Marcelo Ebrard was not there because he was sent to the United Kingdom as a representative of President Andrés Manuel López Obrador at the funeral of Queen Isabel.
Morena’s coordinator in the Senate, Ricardo Monreal, did not arrive, although he was invited, according to Mario Delgado.
Among Morena’s nearly 3,000 congressmen, there was a majority chorus of support for Sheinbaum. In fact, when Adán Augusto López was presented at the presidium, he received boos from that group, while shouts and applause thundered when he presented himself to the head of government.
Both presidential hopefuls sat next to Mario Delgado.
Other Moreno governors took their baton, such as Américo Villarreal, president-elect of Tamaulipas, while others took boos, such as David Monreal, from Zacatecas; Rutilio Escandón, from Chiapas, and Carlos Manuel Merino, from Tabasco.
