Shows “Temporary fracture” in Chimkowe

The exhibition is made up of three series of works created between 2019 and 2022. The first of them, called “Neotectonics”, is based on the photographic record of natural landscapes of Chile, intervened in an analog way with layers of the same image. The perceptual ruptures generated by the superpositions of one image over another, allow to create from a poetic and metaphorical point of view, visual reflections around the environmental transformations generated by seismic movements.
These types of events, which originate from geological faults and interaction of tectonic plates, are part of a dynamic capable of modifying geography, while becoming threats that lead us to rethink human vulnerability to the forces of nature.
Derived from the material experimentations of the previous project, the second group of works is called “Seismic Models”. This series has as its technical axis the construction of reinterpreted seismic scientific models, from the creation of volumes with colored papers and photographs of rocks. These models considered as conceptual, abstract, graphic or visual representations, are intended to describe, simulate and analyze this type of geological phenomena.
Finally, the third series of works called “Counterforms”, leaves aside the medium and materialities previously used to work directly on the rocks. In the cracks or free spaces that exhibit some of them, sewing threads are incorporated to form wefts that fill the material fraction previously occupied. The objective of these actions is to reflect on geological time; scale that spans large periods of time. From this, what is no longer there is materialized by incorporating the past into the present.
The new images, volumes and objects intervened, are now containers of superpositions, folds, gaps, reliefs and plots loaded with various temporalities. This allows, among other things, to propose personal reflections on planetary dynamics, as well as human attempts to explain natural phenomena.

Emilio Fuentes Traverso (Santiago, Chile, 1983) has a degree in biology education (UMCE), a diploma in digital photography: aesthetics and techniques (PUC) and a master’s degree in image studies from the Alberto Hurtado University. He has combined his profession with various activities related to photography and visual arts. Since 2008 he has participated in collective and individual exhibitions, workshops, art fairs and competitions, photographic projections and portfolio viewings in Chile, Germany, Spain, Brazil, Slovenia, Argentina and Mexico.

“My work explores the terrains of photography, volume and the coexistence of images and materialities of the same or different origin. Through the generation of perceptual discontinuities generated by the superposition of elements, I articulate a body of work that contains objects and images with informative transformations. From this logic, connected with the observation of natural and social phenomena, I can create representations, reinterpretations and visual reflections,” he explains.
