Government insists that new director of Metro “has the powers” to hold office and does not contemplate removing him

In the framework of the session of the mixed subcommittee on budget – where the specific transport items were addressed – there was an issue that came to the surface again: the tweet published by the new director of Metro de Santiago, Nicolás Valenzuela, where he supported the evasion of public transport in 2019.
The opposition condemned Valenzuela’s statements and called for his resignation from the state board. Meanwhile, from National Renewal, they conditioned the support to the budget items of public transport.
At the beginning of the session, Deputy Frank Sauerbaum (RN) summoned the Minister of Transport -present in the instance- Juan Carlos Muñoz, indicating that if they do not dismiss Valenzuela, they will not give their support to approve the items.
“I understand that this was not your decision, but you will understand that you have to take responsibility for people who today work under your wing,” he said.
Given this, Muñoz said that Valenzuela “has the powers to be able to be director of Metro, although I understand the political point that is being made regarding the tweets that he could have made three years ago.”
