Activists reject AMLO’s attacks on the judiciary

Civil organizations, activists and academics rejected the attacks by President Andrés Manuel López Obrador, and the Undersecretary of Security, Ricardo Mejía Berdeja, against Judge Karla Macías, who stopped the National Guard’s adhesion to the Sedena.
“We reject the attack on judicial independence from the microphone of the Executive,” they wrote on social networks.
Through a statement they requested respect for the division of powers and judicial independence.

“We demand that the federal executive branches, and all the states of the Republic, act in accordance with our Constitution, respect the division of powers and not undermine judicial independence.”

The organizations emphasized that a basic principle of democracies is the separation of powers, otherwise the balance that guarantees the governability of a country would be lost.

Therefore, they asked the Council of the Federal Judiciary to establish a system of protection for judges who receive attacks or criminalization for doing their work, and for citizens to reject these attacks.
Among the signatories are Mexico Evalua, Intersecta, Borde Político, Madres Unidas por Nuestros Hijos, Fundación para la Justicia, among others.
Also Artemisa Cabrera Luque, Carlos Bravo Regidor, Maite Azuela, Catalina Pérez Correa and Judge Erika María Rodríguez Rodríguez.
Government criticizes resolution of the Judiciary
Ricardo Mejía, undersecretary of Public Security, exposed the federal judge who stopped indefinitely the transfer of the National Guard to the Secretariat of National Defense (Sedena) considering that it exceeded its powers.
“This judge exceeds her powers because raising the contradiction between a law of a general nature and the political Constitution in terms of Article 105 of the Constitution only corresponds to the Supreme Court of Justice. And this judge, at first, decreed the suspension of a decree sent by the legislative branch, well, this resolution was challenged before a collegiate court and the provisional suspension was null and void,” he said.
The resolution of the head of the Ninth District Court of Guanajuato orders not only to avoid the transfer of the security corps to the Army, decreed since last September 9, but also that the resources transferred to the Defense must be returned.
“Do not transfer the operational and administrative control of the National Guard to the Ministry of National Defense, and that agency continues under the command of the Secretariat of Security and Citizen Protection, as prescribed in Article 21 of the Constitution,” the suspension orders.
