ISP Issues Alert for “Out of Normal” pH Levels on Head Lice Drug

The Institute of Public Health of Chile (ISP) issued an alert for Launol Lotion, a drug used to eliminate lice, because pH levels were recorded outside normal specifications.
After a shelf stability study by Laboratorio Chile, who manufacture the pediculicide and scabicide, the manufacturer announced the results and from the ISP took the measure.
“There is a moderate risk of unwanted effects, such as skin irritation and burning; Considering that it is a drug that is used in pediatric population, in previously affected skins and is directly sold, so it does not require medical supervision. In addition, they emphasized that the alert does not contemplate Launol Shampoo, only the lotion that is topical.

All Launol Lotion units will be discontinued until further notice, so from the ISP motivated to use drugs with active ingredients such as permethrin and sulfur to treat pediculosis and scabies.

Health worker recommendations:

Be attentive to possible consultations of patients who are already in treatment with the affected medicine, so that you can advise them on the available therapeutic alternatives.
The drug Launol Lotion will not be available on the market until the holder can have new units to be marketed, so you should consider prescribing or recommending to your patients some therapeutic alternative.
While the supply problem persists, it is recommended that no new treatments be started with this product, since their continuity cannot be guaranteed, so other medications should be considered.
The information of the supply problem will be updated as soon as possible, to indicate its resolution or persistence.

Recommendations for patients:

If you are undergoing treatment or keep Launol Lotion at home, refrain from using it and, preferably, delete it.
In case you need to use a product for pediculosis or scabies, consult the alternatives available with the pharmaceutical chemist.

Recommendations for healthcare centers and pharmacies:

Each establishment must check if they have stocks of Launol Lotion, segregate them to be removed and return them to the laboratory through the usual channels.
It is not allowed to distribute or dispense Launol Lotion corresponding to the affected lots (all those currently available on the market).
