Rio Carnival expects revenues of $870 million this year

The Carnival of Rio de Janeiro, the most emblematic in Brazil, expects this year revenues of 4,500 million reais (about 870 million dollars), the city’s mayor’s office said Monday.
The festival of the ‘cidade maravilhosa’ is responsible for the third part of all the economic movement of the South American giant during the carnival season.
According to the Mayor’s Office, the expected amount for the carnival period will be 12.5% higher than in 2020, the last year in which the party was held with all its components, because in 2021, due to the still latent effects of the covid-19 pandemic, the street comparsas (blocos), considered the soul and life of carnival, were canceled.
Only with the groups that make up the ‘Carnaval da rúa’, revenues of 1,200 million reais (232 million dollars) are expected, an increase of 20% compared to 2020.
The numbers are from the second edition of the Data Carnival study, prepared by the Municipal Secretariat of Economic Development, Innovation and Simplification, in collaboration with the João Goulart Foundation Institute and the municipal tourism office Riotur.
The Rio Carnival is an engine of economic development of the city because it generates employment throughout the year and is the source of income for thousands of families who live from the party.
A single day of parade in the Sambadrome moves around 20,000 people.
In the 27 parades of the sambadrome in 2022, which include those of the companies of the Special Group and those of the Gold series, 66,200 people participated.
To make this year’s Rio Carnival “unforgettable,” the mayor’s office gave a never-before-seen subsidy (2.15 million reais, about $415,860) to each of the Special Group’s ‘escolas’, the ‘cream of cream’ of all the city’s samba companies and those that perform the majestic parades of the sambadrome.
“After the difficult moment that Rio and the Carioca Carnival went through the successive political and administrative crises of recent years, aggravated by the pandemic, it is time to hold the largest Carnival in history in 2023,” said Eduardo Paes, mayor of the city, when presenting the data.
