Independiente tied with Racing in the classic of Avellaneda

At the Estadio Libertadores de América in Avellaneda for the 12th round of the Liga Profesional de Fútbol (LFP), Independiente drew with Racing Club 1-1 in Ricardo Zielinski’s debut on the bench. At home, against one of the teams that showed good play throughout the championship but diminished in recent dates, Zielinski’s team, a few days after the arrival of the new coach, had from the beginning of the classic a remarkable change of attitude. In the first half, both teams lived the encounter with the emotion and friction that implies a classic, without losing sight of the rival goal. Thus came the first goal in the 19th minute when, after a center by Matías Giménez, it was Martín Cauteruccio who lowered the ball with his chest, took a few seconds to settle and, from a few steps outside the area, took a powerful cross shot that beat the goal of Gabriel Arias. With the partial defeat on the scoreboard, Racing insisted and it was Rodrigo Rey who showed off a few minutes later by clearing with excellent reflexes a good shot and thus avoiding the tie. However, after a series of opportunities, Fernando Gago’s team got a controversial penalty after a push by Nicolás Vallejo on Facundo Mura that in the subsequent images seemed to occur outside the area. Despite the complaints of the Independiente squad, Yael Falcón Pérez did not hesitate in his decision and from the VAR confirmed the penalty, so Matías Rojas took the ball and, from the eleven steps, nailed the ball in the angle of Rey with a violent shot. With the draw, the teams went to the complement with evident desire to impose themselves on the result. Given the lack of efficiency, the back and forth that consisted of the second half featured aggressive counterattacks and little creation of clear opportunities, but the tie persisted on the scoreboard.
