Athletic Bilbao thrashed Atlético Madrid, coached by Argentine Diego “Cholo” Simeone, 3-0 today at the San Mamés Stadium, for the second leg of the semifinals of the Copa del Rey, and qualified for the definition of the competition. After the advantage obtained in the first leg (they won 1-0 at the Cívitas Metropolitano), the Basque team made the difference at home thanks to the brothers Iñaki and Nico Williams, who scored a goal each in the first half. Already in the second half, with the key practically defined, striker Gorka Guruzeta scored the third and sealed the qualification of the team led by Fernando Valverde.In the Atlético Madrid formation, the three world champions were in the starting line-up: Rodrigo De Paul, Nahuel Molina and Ángel Correa. The latter two were replaced in the opening minutes of the second half. Athletic will define the title head-to-head with Mallorca next Saturday, April 6 at the Estadio de La Cartuja, located on the outskirts of Seville.The Basque team is the second most winning club in the history of the Copa del Rey with 23 titles, behind Barcelona who have 31. For their part, the Mallorcan team will play their fourth final and only managed to win the title in the 2003 edition with Cameroonian striker Samuel Eto’o as a figurehead.
