What is “Ennui”, the new emotion coming to Inside Out 2

This coming June 13, the second installment of “Inside Out 2” arrives in theaters that will continue the journey through the mind of Riley, who is now no longer a child, but is going through the stage of adolescence. “The first movie was about memories and we wanted to expand that world in the second one. The idea of beliefs seemed like a natural progression to Riley, who is now 13 years old. And what are beliefs made of? How do they affect the mind? How are they related to the sense of identity? All these questions seemed very rich to us from an emotional point of view,” explains screenwriter Dave Holstein.De this way the new film brings back to Joy, Sadness, Fury, Fear and Disgust, the emotions protagonists of the acclaimed Disney and Pixar film released in 2015. But they are no longer alone since with the arrival of puberty, Anxiety, Ennui, Shame and Envy will land. And although one of the most striking for its peculiar characterization was “Anxiety”, moviegoers wonder what “Ennui” is about, which is represented as a violet teenager, with an apathetic character and a languid look directed towards her cell phone. What is this new character about? Ennui, as is her original name in French, is played by actress Adele Exarchopoulos, and she explains where the name comes from: “It’s what you would call boredom,” she explained to the media. In this way the character will show us an apathetic, lazy and expressionless facet. We also see her inseparable from her cell phone, something very representative of today’s teenagers, and her main job is to keep Riley away from things that don’t deserve her time and energy, such as drama. They may be identified with the name of “OCAP Function”.
