Filo.música | Now everyone does pop?

The trap boom that followed the end of El Quinto Escalón (the most important freestyle competition in Latin America) gave birth to a scene that mutated over the years. After a while of refusing to experiment with other sounds, those who dared to play reggaeton, rkt and cumbia arrived. But now there’s something else. Everything is leaning towards what the industry is cataloging as ‘urban pop’. What is it about? Look at it in this Filo.music.
Things were clearly changing when something as mainstream as the Bizarrap Sessions began to veer from that mix between reggaeton and trap to something more pop. But we can’t talk about pop in Argentina without mentioning Miranda! and it was precisely with the help of this iconic duo that, for example, an outsider like Dillom was encouraged to the genre. And they weren’t just isolated songs: thanks to “HOTEL MIRANDA” – this album of reversions of their best songs – we saw other artists classified as urban venturing into pop. It is from this collaboration with the duo that EMILIA makes its change of sound official and leads this revival of 2000s pop with its album “.mp3”. But also by the hand of our own Argentine diva of the genre is that TAICHU confirms having earned his place in the hottest pop of our country. Even CHITA, which had started on the R&B side, in “attelier” turns to a more pop side. Even Duki and Khea changed the sound of “Remember Me” to this electropoperized trap:
And the last of all was undoubtedly the girl from Argentina. Now – while there is clearly a change in the sound of the artists, this change is also in the industry – and here to check which one happened first. But for example, we talked about the Biza sessions as the reflection of the mainstream of the scene, let’s call it urban, right? Well, thanks to his song with Shakira, Biza wins a LATIN GRAMMY FOR BEST POP SONG. So there is already an agreement that this is today’s POP, that’s what it sounds like. BUT here is another fact that draws attention which is that in this same installment Bizarrap wins another Latin Grammy for BEST URBAN SONG for the session with Quevedo and the truth is that there is not so much difference in terms of the beat. Hence, among other things, that URBAN MUSIC is not very useful to label genres. The bottom line is that today the limits in terms of what an artist can show you in a song and in the one that follows are infinite – if you don’t care, they even throw a Mexican corrido at you. And obviously versatility is also part of the artist’s search and that is not judged, but something is clearly happening if suddenly everyone who identified with one genre is now switching to another. But we asked VOS – what do you think about everyone doing pop now?
