Mexico. – It is estimated that 45 percent of adults snore from time to time; and 25 percent already do so on a regular basis. The fact that breathing generates such noise is due to multiple causes, from anatomical to lifestyle, but experts still do not know many details and, above all, why there are people who have many reasons to do so and are not snorers. When breathing, air passes through a wind tunnel formed by the nose, pharynx and larynx. If it does so unhindered, it does not bounce off the walls of that tunnel and, therefore, breathing is silent. But if there is vibration, snoring does occur. Having extra kilos is one of the causes, it also occurs due to nasal polyps, tobacco or drinking alcohol are other factors that predispose to snoring, colds and allergies. Dr. Carlos O’Connor stresses that “snoring should not be normalized or downplayed. Even if there is no apnea, snoring has health consequences. Many times the sound ends up waking the snorer, making it difficult for him to rest and causing both morning fatigue and daytime drowsiness. Therefore, in their presence, it is always recommended to visit the otolaryngologist to solve the problem as soon as possible. If it is not treated, the normal evolution is that it ends in apnea.”
