The preventive detention of the former governor of Tucumán, José Alperovich, is confirmed

This Thursday, the National Court of Cassation confirmed the preventive detention for the former governor of Tucumán, José Alperovich, convicted of having sexually abused his niece repeatedly between December 2017 and March 2018.The former senator was sentenced to 16 years in prison on June 18, after a long oral debate in the courts of the City of Buenos Aires. That same day he was detained in the Ezeiza prison by decision of Federal Judge Juan Ramos Padilla.La defense had appealed both the conviction and the preventive detention and requested his release, in fact, Augusto Garrido, his lawyer, justified the appeal arguing that Alperovich “conformed to the law, appeared at all the procedural acts to which he was required and did not leave the country.” He also said that the leader “has ample roots constituted by a stable family, domicile in this city and work occupations” and that “he has no criminal record.” Garrido also mentioned Alperovich’s state of health: “It is a 69-year-old person who at the time of his arrest was going through the postoperative period of neurological surgery associated with his spine and suffered from several health conditions, some pending verification and others verified, such as hyperthyroidism, hypertension and a history of coronary artery.” From the complaint and the prosecutor Sandro Abraldes listed the reasons why the Justice should not grant him the benefit of release, since they argued that “there are real procedural risks that could put the end of the process at risk.” And, finally, they stressed that Alperovich was sentenced to 16 years in prison after “endless solid, precise and concordant evidence gathered in the debate.”
