while dozens of fishermen and shipowners are manifested in the Conapesca Mazatlan installations, an army of people working in the repair of boats for the upcoming shrimp season. Many of these people who work in repairing the boats receive payments, however, hundreds of sea men working without receiving a penny, just hoping that when ships go to sea may have a space as part of the crew and ensure an income for the time that lasts the harvest. Fishing has historically been one of the economic activities most important to Mazatlan, but it has been losing its value since on many occasions fishermen do not get enough to stay afloat and are increasingly more dependent from the props. Currently, sea men are seeking to avoid the ban on commercial activities of fishing in the Gulf of Baja California, because they consider that this would be the “coup de grace” for its industry, however because they are dragging other problems as the rises in fuel and repairs that are increasingly expensive, among others.
