appointed Professor of Harvard Gita Gopinath as its next Chief Economist, IMF becoming the first woman appointed to the prestigious post.
Gopinath will replace Maurice Obstfeld, who announced in July that it will retire at the end of this year. The appointment comes as the Fund in Washington faces problems such as the rise of protectionism in the world and the impact of technology on employment.
“Gita is one of the most prominent economists in the world, with impeccable academic credentials and a proven record of intellectual leadership and broad international experience,” said the Managing Director of the IMF, Christine Lagarde, in a statement.
Gopinath is a Professor of international studies and Economics at Harvard University. He is co-editor of the American Economic Review and Co-Director of the international finance and macroeconomics of the National Bureau of economic research.
He is coeditor of the current Handbook of international economics with the former Chief Economist of the IMF Kenneth Rogoff. He has written about 40 research articles on rates of Exchange, trade and investment, international financial crisis, monetary policy, debt and crisis in emerging markets, according to the Fund.
