Globally, 63% of online risks come from strangers and people that victims know only through the network. This according to a study that Microsoft performs every year to measure attitudes and perceptions of adolescents and adults in 22 countries.
As part of the activities to the Internet insurance day, held at the international level on February 5, the technology company presented the results of this annual global survey of risks online. Unwanted contact and receive unsolicited sexual content images were the most prominent risks in this edition.
Globally, the study shows that Chile is ranked number 20 of 22, just above South Africa and Peru. Meanwhile, in our country, the main risks are: receive content offensive or obscene, as well as find false news or deception and receive persistent demands by unwanted relations. Another interesting fact is that Chilean adolescents ask for less aid, contrary to the global trend.
Results in Chile in particular, in our country the 27% last year resorted to their parents, while this year only 25% do so. In contrast, in the world, the figure grew 32 points, reaching 42%.
Following on our territory and compared with other age groups, are women in adolescence period who suffered more pain – moderate to severe – as a result of the interactions on the internet.

For this reason, it is important that people are aware of the impact that can have their interactions online and adopt a behavior that allows them to have a positive, safe, and healthy experience.
Recommendations as part of its efforts to improve the experiences and interactions online, Microsoft also invites all persons that commit themselves to engage responsibly online, through the Digital Civility Challenge that includes the following points: 1. live through the ‘golden rule’, to act with empathy, compassion and kindness in every interaction, and treat all persons that made a connection in a dignified and respectful manner.
2 respect differences, honor different to their own prospects and when a disagreement arises, react in a thoughtful way, and avoid insults and personal attacks.
3. to pause before responding to things that are in disagreement, and not publish or send something that could hurt, damage the reputation or threaten the security of someone.
4 defend others and themselves by supporting those who have been White’s abuse or cruelty online, report threatening activities and preserve evidence of inappropriate behavior or attempting against the security of others.
“Our goal is to support security online and provide a unique way for parents and teachers to educate young people on how to stay safe online, through the understanding that the risks online and its consequences in the real world” , commented Andrés Rengifo, director of cybersecurity and intellectual property to Microsoft Latin America Affairs.
“If we observe carefully, much of our daily lives happens online and is therefore very important to make these digital environments reliable and worthy places,” added.
