For the second year in a row the prestigious American environment, The New York Times ranked the Elqui Valley as one of the 52 places to visit during 2019 highlighting astrotourism, two weeks after the town of the Coq Region uimbo is one of the privileged places to appreciate the solar eclipse. The publication highlighted that among its visitors there are “a diverse group of wine and pisco fans, stargazers and nature lovers”. Also this year, because of the eclipse, “the demand for accommodation has exceeded the supply, with an estimated 300,000 people expected in the area, and even hotels in La Serena are booked.”Land of PoetsThe medium also emphasized that in the area “when the sun rises, travelers can walk through the vineyards or stroll through the streets of Vicuña, the largest city. It is a center of production of pisco and also the cradle of the poet Gabriela Mistral, winner of the Nobel Prize in Literature”. For the Undersecretary of Tourism, Mónica Zalaquett, this recognition “leaves us with a huge challenge: to professionalize and digitize the tourist offer in the region”. They are therefore working on a plan that will run until 2022.
