Finance Minister Felipe Larraín referred this morning to the progress and challenges that exist in terms of gender quality in the labour market.
At the award ceremony of the IV version of the Award Impulsa Talento Femenino, presented by the Fundación ChileMujeres, PwC Chile and newspaper Pulso, the authority noted that the gap in female labor participation with respect to the OECD has narrowed in recent times, without however, it ensures that there is still room for improvement.
“Female labor participation is still below the OECD average of 65%. Closing the gap in female labour participation would increase our country’s GDP growth by 1.8% to 2.8%,” said Minister Larraín.
In that vein, he added that “as a Government we have implemented a work adaptability agenda that incorporates various projects, in order to facilitate women’s participation, reduce wage gaps and the female unemployment rate.” Among other measures, he highlighted the Work Distance Bill, the Youth Labour Statute, and the Labour Modernization project.
Beyond bills and incentives, the head of public finances called on the private sector to close gender gaps, for which will is required.
“Wanting to make this cultural change is as important or more important than projects and incentives. It is an issue of justice, and it will contribute valuablely to the competitiveness of the country and to our goal of achieving comprehensive and sustainable development for all Chileans,” the Minister of Finance said.
