The capital of Chile is the second most expensive city in Latin America according to the 25th Annual Cost of Living Report by the consultancy Mercer. The document, which compares 209 cities around the world, lists the most expensive urban centers for expatriate employees.
To make the ranking, the studio used New York as the base city for comparisons. It also included the analysis of more than 200 urban indices, such as housing, transportation, clothing, food and entertainment.
Based on these criteria, Santiago reached 79th place globally, falling 10 positions from last year. In Latin America, the Chilean city was only surpassed by Montevideo, capital of Uruguay.
Asia among the first
Eight of the top 10 are occupied by Asian cities. The most expensive city for foreign workers is Hong Kong, followed by Tokyo, Singapore and Seoul. The rest of the top 10 are Zurich (5), Shanghai (6), Ashgabat (7), Beijing (8), New York (9) and Shenzhen (10).
But why does Asia top the rankings? Mercer says it is due to high consumer goods costs and a dynamic real estate market.
By way of comparison, an average liter of milk costs $780. In Hong Kong, the city leading the ranking, the same product equals HK$22.84, or around $1990.
