CHICAGO (AP) — Chicago police said Friday that a stampede occurred at Independence Day celebrations at Navy Pier that injured more than a dozen people began when security guards who may have confused a firecrackers with a firearm began alerting passers-by to shelter. Security guards believed it was a gunman and urged people to throw theye to the ground, Fred Waller, the Chicago Police Chief, said at a news conference. He added that the authorities searched the area in accordance with the protocol for a gun-related incident.
