translated from Spanish: UMSNH is home to the 2nd International Meeting on Tropical Eastern Pacific Sea Turtles

Morelia, Michoacán.- The Michoacana University of San Nicolás de Hidalgo is the headquarters of the 5th National Meeting on Mexican Sea Turtles and 2nd International Meeting on Marine Turtles of the Tropical Eastern Pacific, organized by the Research Institute About Natural Resources, from 1 to 4 October 2019, at the University Cultural Center in Morelia.
Dr. Almas Lilia Fuentes Farías, director of the Inirena, explained that the UMSNH Sea Turtle project is nearly four decades old; he emerged 1982 at the Faculty of Nicolaite Biology, promoted by the teacher Javier Alvarado Díaz, and an enthusiastic group of teachers and students.
The mission of this group was to recover the black turtle population (Chelonia agassizii) that nests mainly on the beaches of Colola and Maruata on the coast of Michoacán, and which at the time was one of the most threatened species in the world and especially that population.
From then on, the joint actions between THE UMSNH biologists and the indigenous communities of the Michoacana coast, have now made the population of black turtles of the Michoacan Pacific, considered a conservation success by the Society Marine Turtle stoives and the Fish and Wildlife Service of the United States of America.
The Michoacan scientist said that today this program is led by MC Carlos Delgado Trejo, head of the Department of Marine and Coastal Ecology of INIRENA, who has been a contributor to the Black Turtle conservation project in Michoacán since 1988 and, leader of the Grupo Americano in the binational Project of Recovery of the Lora Turtle in Rancho Nuevo, Tamaulipas from 1991-1998.
