Italy.- Model Ayesha Tan Jones waited to stand in front of the cameras to speak out against the “fetishization of mental illness”.
The spring/summer 2020 total white collection presented by creative director Alessandro Michele in Milan consisted of outfits inspired by straitjackets, straight-cut utilitarian pieces, buckles and oppressive straps. On a conveyor belt (like airport) the models were transported at high speed in front of the audience while in the background recordings of voices were heard saying “I just want to be happy”; several have pointed to a clear reference to schizophrenia and an asylum.
The event was amid the surprise at the staging and normality until one of his models raised his hands in protest. Jones was deeply offended and showed the palms of his hands on which “mental health is not fashionable” had been written. “Presenting these symbols as accessories to sell clothes in today’s capitalist climate is vulgar, unimaginative and offensive to the millions of people around the world affected by these problems,” the model later published about what happened in his feed Instagram next to a video of its demonstration.
