On Tuesday, the National Commission for Scientific Research (Conicyt) released the results of the Second National Survey of Social Perceptions of Science and Technology, conducted between 2018 and 2019 by the Microdata Center of the University of Chile.
Among the relevant results of the study, the perception increased, compared to the first survey conducted in 2016, regarding how scientific some activities are, including ancestral medicine that rose 8 points (from 35% to 43%) like theology (30 to 38%) and acupuncture (38% to 46%). On the economy, growth in perception was 11 points (37% to 48%) 12 points for engineering (60% to 72%).
Another of the results of the survey noted that 67% of respondents agreed that “we rely too much on science and not enough on faith,” while 86% said they are with “science and technology changing our way of life too fast.”
72% meanwhile, said believe in miracles, while 60% claimed to believe that spirits exist and 48% said they believed in psychic powers, claims that increased by seven, five and 10 points respectively, compared to the first survey.
