translated from Spanish: For the third year in a row, Chilean Hake Day will be celebrated

Two weeks after the close of its ban, the common or Chilean hake, popularly known as “fished”, will celebrate this Sunday 13th its National Day, commemorated by the conservation organization WWF Chile, together with artisanal fishermen from various coves of the country, with support from Sernapesca.
This celebration, established in 2017, aims to make the current crisis of Chilean hake, which is in a state of over-exploitation, and promote a responsible consumption of it, which involves acquiring the product in a legal way and respecting its Veda.
“It is urgent to take steps to reverse the situation afflicting the Chilean hake fishery, one of the most important for the country and whose overexploited status can be accentuated by the impacts of climate change. We are promoting a series of proposals to deal with a crisis that puts the livelihoods of nearly 18,000 fishermen nationally at risk, as well as our own food security,” said Valesca Montes, coordinator Sustainable Fisheries of WWF Chile.
Stock recovery
Among the proposals generated by the organization in the framework of the #LargaVedaALaMerluza campaign is the extension of the biological ban from one to two months, between 15 August and 15 October each year, until permanent signs of a recovery are recorded stocks. This, accompanied by a contingency plan that helps mitigate the economic and social impact that will generate a broader ban.
“There is growing concern about decisions made in management committees to change the risk rates of some fisheries, which is directly related to quota levels. We firmly believe that the role of the Technical Scientific Committees (CCTs) in this area should be relieved and we cannot allow decision-makers to be again concerned in fisheries extraction. In addition, transparency channels should be improved as to how TTCs are determining acceptable quota ranges today, especially given the critical fisheries scenario in Chile,” Montes said.
As for the celebration, the main event will be held from 10 hours in Caleta Portales, with the support of the Fishermen’s Union, and will have as its protagonist the traditional sandwich El Portalino (hake churrasco)..
In addition, an urban intervention will be carried out at the point of entry to the cove.
