translated from Spanish: Dry eye syndrome related to the use of cell phones, tablets and computers

Mexico.- Reduce the brightness on the screen of cellular devices, tablets and computers, do not expose yourself directly to air conditioning, correct the graduation of the lenses and go for review with the specialist at least twice a year, are some recommendations to prevent dry eye syndrome, noted Ingrid Amparo Quiñones Emmert, ophthalmologist at the Mexican Social Security Institute (IMSS).
The specialist, attached to the Ophthalmology Service of the General Hospital, la Raza National Medical Center, noted that this condition has multifactorial origin and is characterized by dehydration of the conjunctiva and the cornea due to evaporation accelerated from tears.
This loss, he said, initially generates several symptoms such as eye burning, red eyes, itching and tearing as part of the irritating process. However, other manifestations such as blurred vision and chronic red eye are also present.
He explained that dry eye is currently associated with the use of electronic devices in a population ranging from 20 to 40 years of age, and even in people who have refractive surgery (surgical procedures that help eliminate or decrease the use glasses or contact lenses).
To address this pathology, Dr. Ingrid Quiñones indicated that the Mexican Social Security Institute provides treatments with topical, anti-inflammatory and immunomodulatory lubricants.
In addition, it recommended taking breaks of 10 to 15 minutes for every five hours of cell phone, tablet or computer use, and constantly lubricating the eyes, on prescription.
In case of severe red eye, he stated, anti-inflammatory agents and even treatment indicated by other specialists such as the rheumatologist or immune ologist. The General Hospital of La Raza is attended on average 40 rightholders every six months with a severe condition.
The eye surface specialist emphasized that in addition to technology, dry eye is related to menopause, allergies, inflammatory diseases such as lupus, rheumatoid arthritis, rosacea, Parkinson’s and diuretic medications, antihistamines and some hormones.
Not addressing this syndrome in a timely manner, he stressed, can lead to corneal ulceration, eye perforation and even vision loss.
Dr. Quiñones Emmert noted that the condition had a higher incidence between the ages of 40 and 50, and 20 percent of the population had it.
In the same age range, her biggest trend was in the female sex due to menopause, but today with the devices it is increasing and occurs at younger ages.
