Bogota, Colombia.- The award edureada film “Roma”, by the Mexican Alfonso Cuarón, was nominated for Best Iberoamerican Film in the eighth edition of the Macondo Awards of Colombia, which will present for the first time an award in this category on November 9 in Medellin, the organizers reported on Tuesday. The film, with which Cuarón won the award for Best Director at the Academy of this year, will compete in this category with nine other films from Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Ecuador, Spain, Paraguay, Portugal, Puerto Rico and Venezuela, detailed the Colombian Academy of Arts And Motion Picture Sciences (Accac) in a statement. 

Among the nominees for Best Ibero-American Film are also “Red”, by the Argentine Benjamin Naishtat; “Averno”, by the Bolivian Marcos Loayza; “Dream Florianopolis”, by Brazil’s Ana Katz; “Cenizas”, by Ecuadorian Juan Sebastián Jácome, and “Champions”, by Spain’s Javier Fesser. The category is completed by “Las heiress”, by Paraguayan Marcelo Martinessi; “O labirinto da saudade”, by the Portuguese Miguel Gon’alves Mendes; “The Silence of the Wind”, from puerto Rican Alvaro Aponte-Centeno, and “La familia”, by the Venezuelan Gustavo Rondón Córdova.
The information added that the Macondo Awards will have this new category after two years of work to achieve it with the Ibero-American Federation of Film Academies (Fiacine) and the Ibero-American Federation of Film and Audiovisual Producers ( Fipca), two “intercontinental organizations” of industry in the region. “One of the greatest benefits of creating this category is the emergence of a new window for our national productions between member countries and towards the world. Also the definitive positioning in the industry (…) internationally from the Colombian Academy”, added the Accac.
The organizers also announced that on October 23rd the nominees will be announced in the 19 categories of the Macondo Awards, which will be presented in the Wooden Box of the Plaza Mayor convention center of Medellin. In the 2018 edition, the film “Matar a Jesús”, directed by Laura Mora, was the big winner by taking five awards, including the best film.
