The head of National Defense in the Metropolitan Region, General Javier Iturriaga, gave a brief balance of the second night of curfew in the communes of the capital.
Iturriaga called last night “quiet”, agreeing with the deployment made through the streets of Santiago, clarifying that they will continue to work to safeguard order.
He also stated that “I am a happy man, I am not at war with anyone,” after being consulted by the statements of President Sebastián Piñera, who last night assured that the country was “at war with a powerful enemy.”
The uniform also referred to questions about the lack of military personnel in communes on the periphery, mainly in areas where slaughties and fires have been recorded by supermarkets and other commercial premises.
The Head of National Defense argued that “undoubtedly when there is excess violence, this causes tension and anxiety in the neighbors,” adding that “we don’t want the population to stand up for themselves.”
In the same vein, he said that “we are making every effort to reach every corner of the city,” but that “the men we have deployed are insufficient for the Metropolitan Region.”
Finally, he detailed that during the day 16 supermarkets will be opened in different communes of Santiago, which will be detailed in the course of the day.
