Morelia, Michoacán.- Through a reform to the Organic Law of the Michoacana University of San Nicolás de Hidalgo (UMSNH), the local deputy, Oscar Escobar Ledesma, will seek to ensure gender parity in the positions of authority within the House of Hidalgo.
The lawmaker emanating from the National Action Party (PAN) denied that his initiative violates the autonomy of the UMSNH, as it only seeks harmonization of the Union’s approval of the Constitutional Gender Parity Reform in the State Bodies , which obliges the judiciary, autonomous bodies and cabinets of the Federal and Local governments to establish parity in its formation.
It would be all the bodies of the University that would have to ensure that 50 per cent of men and women alike hold positions at the institution, from the Technical Council, University Councils, Scientific Research Councils, Directorates of Faculties, and even the Rectory.
The panist mentioned that in the last eight provisional appointments of directors, only three women were elected.
Despite the above, Escobar Ledesma did not rule out that the University could controvert the initiative and that if it did, it would be violating the right of women to access representation in organs of the highest house of studies in Michoacán.
