The United Nations Children’s Fund, UNICEF, issued a statement calling for clarification and investigation of the detention of children and adolescents in Villa Alemana, as well as the circumstances The ones that happened.
“The investigation of these facts must be done in the light of international standards, where respect, protection and guarantee of their rights is established,” the statement reads.
“The social situation facing Chile more than three weeks ago has affected thousands of children and adolescents in various ways. During this time their daily routines have been altered, as classes are suspended; have been exposed to detens and physical violence in the context of the demonstrations; in addition to being exposed to stressful situations,” they added.
UNICEF also reiterated its call to responsibly protect the physical and psychological integrity of all children and adolescents, not only from police institutions but also from their communities and families, to avoid exposing them to situations put their safety at risk, always taking into account the best interests of the child.
“The Peace Agreement, convened by the government, must permeate all institutions of the State and all members of society. UNICEF is convinced that the right path to finding a solution is dialogue, which should also include children and adolescents as agents of change,” he concludes.
