translated from Spanish: Complaint mistreatment of police horses in Concepción

On the afternoon of Wednesday, November 13, a video released through social media exposed the mistreatment of a police horse in the city of Concepción. According to the record, the uniform hit a sensitive part of the animal, then pushed it.
The images have become viral and animalistic organizations such as Animal Libre, which works to defend animal rights, have repudiated the registry, requesting more evidence to report the facts, condemning the use of horses by Carabineros de Chile and, above all, the violence and mistreatment to which they are exposed.
“In the face of the latest videos showing the mistreatment of a carabinero hitting a horse in Concepción, together with a network of organizations we are compiling more background to initiate an animal abuse lawsuit against police horses by Carabineros from Chile. In this vein, we demand that the authorities end the presence of animals in the demonstrations,” says Mauricio Serrano, president of Animal Libre.
For the last four weeks, animal organizations have been calling for the sharing of images or videos of animal use and abuse at demonstrations, with the aim of curbing the presence of police mounted in protests in the face of the serious exposure given to them animals, who may be harmed in these instances.
In this way, Animal Libre, together with Fundación Right y Defensa Animal, Fundación APLA, Sinergia Animal, Vegetarianos Hoy, Te Protejo, SaveValpo, Defensoría Derechos Animales, Anima Naturalis, Bunny Lovers Chile and Fundación Galgos Chile, are collecting material so that animal abuse doesn’t go unpunished.
Veterinarians request to stop using horses at demonstrations
The Veterinary Medical College (Colmevet) made an “enphamic” call to Carabineros not to use the horses of the institution in the demonstrations.
“We call on Carabineros of Chile not to unnecessarily expose animals or use them in situations of confrontation with the citizenry,” the agency said in a statement.
The document assesses the use of equines in rescue and guardwork, but questions their use to re-establish public order.
“There is technology currently available in our police, as well as a wide range of police vehicles to restore public order, it does not seem justifiable to expose animals to environments of high risk and danger,” they say.
