translated from Spanish: UAEM teacher was murdered; students protest

Authorities of the State of Mexico confirmed that Sonia Pérez Rodea, who was a dance teacher at the Universidad Autónoma del Estado de México (UAEM) and whose body was found in the bathrooms of the camerinos area of the Teatro Universitario Los Jaguares, in Toluca, was murdered.
The prosecutor of the entity, Alejandro Gómez, explained that the victim made, together with her ex-husband, preparations for a play within the campus, which was canceled.
“The work is not carried out, the husband comes out, but the teacher never came out,” she explained to the media on December 11.
He also noted that Pérez Rodea had filed a complaint against his former family violence. Even, the prosecutor detailed, the last antecedent occurred in the last days of last November.
The official said the teacher did receive protective measures, but justified her absence from femicide by ensuring that the victim only requested surveillance at her home, because that’s where she came to suffer the violence of her ex-husband.
“We introduced the husband to give his return and then we will determine his legal status,” Gomez said.
Sonia’s femicide caused students to take the university rectory in protest and paint inside demanding justice for their teacher.
Students took the Aula Magna de Rectoría de la UAEM and the Patio del Cincuentenario.
At the cry of justice university women manifested themselves in the rectory building of the UAEM demanding clarification of the murder of dance teacher Sonia Pérez.

In response, UAEM attorney general Raúl Ortiz argued that the university has punished gender-based violence by dismissing 16 professors, plus three more cases that are under review.
