On this Friday, the report of the office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, Michelle Bachelet, on the demonstrations in Chile and the events that occurred during the social outburst was released. It is a 35-page document stating that “of the information collected by OHCHR, there are good reasons to argue that, as of 18 October, there have been a large number of serious human rights violations”. The document also states that “since mid-October, most of those who have exercised the right to peaceful assembly have done so peacefully. However, there have been numerous attacks on members of the security forces and their facilities.” In this regard, the document argues that “certain human rights violations, in particular the misuse of less lethal weapons and ill-treatment, are repeated in time, space and with respect to who are the alleged perpetrators and victims “. It also refers to the police, where they state that “Carabineros used non-lethal force when the demonstration was peaceful, with the apparent aim of dispersing the demonstration or preventing participants from reaching the meeting point. (…) There are well-founded reasons to argue that there has been a disproportionate and sometimes unnecessary use of less lethal weapons, particularly riot shotguns but also tear gas, used at close range,” they reause. And in this same vein, they refer to the “alarmingly high number” of people with “injuries to the eyes or face accountforthis of this serious violation. The use of lead-containing pellets is of particular concern.”.IN DEVELOPMENT
