Mexico.– President Andrés Manuel Obrador will grant a pardon to prisoners, including former governor Mario Villanueva who, by age, already reaches the time established in the law to continue purging his sentence in his home.
At his morning conference, López Obrador announced that they are already preparing the package of pardons for those who are wrongfully imprisoned and anticipated that it will be ready before the end of this year.
“We want those who are unfairly in jail to be able to leave, before the end of the year if possible, but that’s where we’re at. We want it to come out, (Mario Villanueva) among others, older people, sick, indigenous people”.
“To remain at home, even if you are a prisoner, for health reasons. In that we are, progress had already been made in the protection of the Public Prosecutor’s Office and we have to be respectful of legal procedures and that took a while,” the president said at his morning conference this Christmas Day.
Villanueva, 71, served the age required to continue his 22-year sentence to which he was sentenced for drug trafficking.
He has been in prison for 18 years and this year a judge denied him to end his sentence at his home, before which he asked for a presidential pardon.
