translated from Spanish: Officialism plays its last card to combine criteria on parity: Piñera and Chile Vamos meet this Sunday to settle common position

The Independent Democratic Union (UDI) froze its participation in Chile Let’s go a few days ago, after the support they gave RN and Evópoli deputies to the opposition’s proposal on gender parity in the constituent process, this satiated an internal conflict in the conglomerate amid the political crisis in the country, however, the disagreement could come to an end tomorrow.
This because helmsmen and senators of the official bloc will meet this Sunday, in the house of President Sebastián Piñera, with the aim of unifying ideas to achieve – after several days of dimes and between the parties – an agreement on the minutes delivered by the Government with two proposals to include in this regard: closed lists by district and double ballot. Senator Juan Antonio Coloma (UDI) was optimistic about the meeting and argued that the options proposed by the Government seem to him to be “reasonable” and “debatable”.
“One has to do with making closed, district lists, which requires that as candidacies there is effectively that 50 percent, and in the result there is also a fairly similar equation without having to put my hand in the urn; and the other option is for each person to have two votes, there is a list of men and a list of women, ensures the joint result. It’s also within the possibilities, because that’s where the principles of not putting their hand in the urn after the election are maintained,” he explained.
Coloma is optimistic and says that to know the best form, the issue must be resolved together. “We need to make a greater effort in that regard and I think it is always better to give a course of understanding to the alternatives, not the confrontation, particularly within the coalitions,” he said.
For his part, MR Manuel José Ossandón said that “of the two options proposed by the Government, it seems to me that the double ballot better represents the vote per person. However, for me the most relevant thing is that the end result is gender parity.”
“I will defend this option to the end, because in a constituent convention the Chilean reality, representative democracy and respect for the right of participation of all people living in Chile, especially our women,” the senator added.
It is worth mentioning that this Monday, January 6, the project will be held to regulate the constituent process in the Senate.
