A group of people broke into the Cathedral of Santiago this morning as the Mass was unfolding where Celestino Aós assumed as Archbishop of Santiago. People joined the line to commune, in the midst of which one of them threw tear cartridges into the altar steps. Security of the enclosure managed to find the subjects and remove them from the place, leaving two detainees, Carabineros confirmed. In the meantime, no material damage was recorded in the property. The apostolic nuncio Alberto Ortega downplayed the incident, stating that “it is an expression of people who wanted to speak out, it was not the right time or the right place, I think it has been a very nice celebration, (…) there has been a small incident that has since been resolved.” At the ceremony Aós referred to the violence that the country has experienced in the context of social manifestations, “division, injustice, lying, violence, are contrary to our Christian status, to our baptismal commitment. No Christian can remain an observer, even less so, as an advocate or a condemner,” he said. The celebration was also attended by the resignation Cardinal Ricardo Ezzatti, who is investigated by justice for a cover-up of sexual abuses committed within the Catholic Church. This also generated a situation of parallel protest, after a group of attendees raised posters with the phrase “And the people, when will they be consulted?”, alluding to the inconvenience caused by the former archbishop’s presence at the ceremony.
