Six out of 10 Mexicans reject marijuana legalization, says a survey of Grupo Reforma and The Dallas Morning News, released this Sunday.
36% said they were in favor.
Rejection increases in groups of women, over 45 s and people with lower levels of schooling.
“Support for legalization is mainly found among men, younger population segments and those with higher levels of schooling,” says Reforma.
The survey was conducted on homes, from 21 to 26 November.
Of the women consulted, 66% said they were against and 29% in favor of legalization. Among men, 51% said they were against and 44% in favor.
Among people with schooling up to primary level, 74% said they were against and 21% in favor.
According to Reforma, the United Committees of Justice, Health and Legislative Studies submitted a draft opinion, proposing, among other measures, to reform article 479 of the General Health Law to raise from 5 to 28 grams the maximum amount of marijuana authorized for “strict and immediate personal consumption, in any of its forms, derivatives or preparations”.
Possession of cannabis would only be penalized when someone has an amount greater than 200 grams.
