The Attorney General’s Office (FGR) obtained an arrest warrant against Dámaso López Serrano, aka the Mini Lic, for being the alleged intellectual author of the death of journalist Javier Valdez.

Following Valdez’s assassination on May 15, 2017, in Culiacán, Sinaloa, who was leaving the offices of his weekly Rio Doce, the authorities have arrested three alleged material authors, Juan Francisco “P”, Heriberto “P” and Luis Idelfonso “S”. 
However, during the trial of Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán, Dámaso López claimed that the children of the cartel leader killed the journalist because he insisted on publishing an interview with the Graduate.
Valdez “disobeyed the threatening orders of my compadre’s children and that’s why they killed him,” said the man known as the Graduate in court, a few yards from the Chapo.
Days after that crime, in one column, another of the journalists and founders of Ríodoce recounted the intimidation against Valdez, having interviewed Dámaso López, when he had a confrontation to control the Sinaloa cartel and a “media war” with the sons of Chapo.
A day after this version was made known in the trial against the Chapo, the director of Riodoce, Ismael Bojórquez Perea, classified the graduate’s statement as media noise, as he considered the relevant subject of the case to be the trial against the intellectual authors and materials of the murder.
“We have insisted a lot that intellectual authorship is a part of the search for truth. What Dámaso stated in court for us is nothing more than let’s say media noise, it is going to be debated, obviously it is very attention what he said, but I do not think that it disrupts the investigation or that changes the course of the investigation that brings feADLE (Special Prosecutor’s Office for the Care of Crimes Committed against Freedom of Expression)”, explained the manager of Riodoce.
