translated from Spanish: The New Global Scenario – The Counter

You don’t have to spend frozen decades like Captain America to see yourself, from one moment to the next, immersed in a world very different from the one we were used to. The situation in our country, like much of the world, shows that we are facing a new global scenario of dizzying dynamism and high volatility, synthesized in the acronym – coined in the nineties – V.U.C.A. (volatility, uncertainty, complexity and ambiguity).
The certainties of other eras fade at great speed, forcing us to question our plans and decisions.
In Chile, after the outbreak of violence on October 18 last year, we saw as suddenly a national coexistence, democracy, model of development and markets, apparently robust and much admired around the world, became vulnerable. From that date and for 5 months we witnessed looting, arson and dismantling, which enjoyed almost absolute impunity, with the support and benevolence of politicians, media and opinion leaders. Even without recovering from this painful process, after a “summer of St. John”, we are beaten again, and in what way,, by a powerful and invisible enemy: Covid-19.
In the face of this health crisis and the uncertainty that this imposes on us, it absolutely changed the social, political and economic scenario that was projected after the outbreak of violence, increasing the complexity of any analysis. Within days, the Constitutional Plebiscite and the Recast aspiration lost its meaning and strength, with the great challenge of our generation prevailing, for which those of us who exercise leadership roles carry great responsibility for our shoulders.
To face this new scenario, full of changes, ambiguities, fake news and post-truths, adaptability, immediacy, coordination and the ability to communicate is essential. We’ve already seen the damage that the reckless announcement of an authority can do.
Today, more than ever we must focus our efforts on serving our country, the lives of thousands of compatriots, and the future of the new generations is up to us.
