Although “The First Man on the Moon” (First Man, 2018) failed to repeat the film event of “La La Land: A Love Story” (La La Land, 2016), Damien Chazelle is not discouraged and, after taking the Oscar in 2017 and becoming one of Hollywood’s spoiled children, tries his luck on the small screen with a couple of projects. On the one hand we have a mysterious series for Apple TV+ that continues to float in limbo, which will take over writing and directing the first season. On the other, “The Eddy”, a dramatic-musical miniseries for Netflix, created by himself and screenwriter Jack Thorne (“His Dark Materials”), who is tasked with writing these eight episodes.
Chazelle will be responsible for standing behind the scenes of the first two chapters of this story centered on the owner of a French nightclub who must deal with the ins and outs of the establishment located in the heart of Paris. The music belongs to Randy Kerber (“The Purple Color”) and Glen Ballard, best known for his collaborations with Alanis Morissette and “Jagged Little Pill” (1995), among many others.
Music eases all sorrows
André Holland, Joanna Kulig, Amandla Stenberg, Tahar Rahim and Lea Bekhti are the protagonists of this ambitious proposal of the streaming platform with the beautiful Parisian stages in the background, focused on Elliot Udo (Holland), who left behind his New York life to start from scratch with a jazz club in Paris: The Eddy. Unfortunately, the establishment’s problems are just beginning, as Elliot’s business partner, Farid (Rahim), may have gotten into some shady business. While Udo tries to keep things afloat, the arrival of his daughter Julie (Stenberg) and the ups and downs in his relationship with Maja (Kulig) – leader of the local’s main band do not help calm his nerves. In this way Chazelle returns to his first love: music and especially jazz. “The Eddy” arrives on the Netflix catalog on May 8th and here we have this new and melancholy sneak peek. In this note:
