The Minister of Health, Jaime Mañalich, reported that the distribution welcomed two of the three recommendations made by the Covid-19 Advisory Council, regarding how to catalog confirmed cases.
Mañalich said that the traditional criterion, used by distribution, targets patients with respiratory symptoms who have PCR examination at the onset of their symptoms, positive.
However, because of the evidence regarding the presence of people who without symptoms give positive PCR for the disease, these will also be reported as confirmed cases. Such persons, however, will not be included in the report of total contagion at the national level and will be reported independently.
“I want to remind you that to the extent that we have expanded the use of PCR to contacts of people who tested positive, the reality in Chile is being consistent with what is reported internationally,” said Mañalich, who added that “from today it brings about change in the information we give every day.”
The minister disclosed that in the last 3 or 4 days 920 PCR tests have been conducted on asymptomatic people who were in close contact with the sick and that of them, 250 appeared as positive, “repeating the more or less known global statistics of 20 to 25%”.
The authority also said that the recommendation to include as confirmed people with symptoms have an infection-compatible chest test was excluded. “According to radiologists there is no unifome protocol, there is no scanner in all locations and it seems to us that it is not yet time to incorporate the third criterion.”
