In a major study released today, remdesivir was shown to be effective against the new coronavirus, shortening patients’ recovery time by four days. It is the first treatment to pass this type of testing and was announced today by the U.S. government and Gilead, the company that produces it. Since the vaccine is supposed to take more than a year, effective treatment could have a noticeable effect to reduce the impact of the pandemic. The study, conducted by the National Institute of Health, tested remdesivir against regular treatment in 1,063 hospitalized patients worldwide. The director of the NIH said the drug reduced the recovery time by an average of 31% from 15 days to 11. In addition, he said there were fewer deaths among those who took redesivir and announced that the results would soon be published in a medical journal. “What was proven is that the drug can block the virus. It will be the standard of care,” Said Fauci. In recent weeks, the remdesivir has been at the center of the scene, although the information that comes from the studios that employ it is inconclusive. A previous study had already initially suggested that it might be useful, but another study, conducted in China and published today in The Lancet, found no improvements in patient recovery.
