In the midst of coronavirus quarantine, protests against racism and abuse of power in the United States continue to grow. On this occasion, the music industry decided to make a historic blackout as a claim, on a day they called “Blackout Tuesday”. In this way, major record labels, digital platforms and American music artists today paralyzed their activities, including Atlantic Records, Capitol Music Group, Spotify, Deezer, Warner Records, Sony Music and Def Jam.In turn, artists such as Mick Jagger, Quincy Jones, Rihanna, Jay-Z, Taylor Swift, Rihanna, Beyoncé, Madonna and Harry Styles, among others also joined the initiative, which spread on social media through different hashtags such as “#TheShowMustBePaused” (“The show must stop”), as well as with the black post. “Over the last few days, the magnitude of the devastation, anger, and sadness I have felt has been overwhelming, to say the least! Watching my people get killed and lynched day after day put me in a bleak place in my heart!” said the “Umbrella” interpreter on her Instagram account.
For her part, the author of “Halo” added on Twitter: “We all witnessed her murder in broad daylight. We’re sad and upset. We can’t normalize this pain.” In turn, Madonna added: “People have gone out to protest in the United States over the brutal murder of George Floyd and many others. And they have the right to do it as Americans they are. The time has come, whether Trump likes it or not. He can’t stop this. If there is no justice, there is no peace!” The Rolling Stones singer also uttered a few words: “It’s heartbreaking to see America hurt again on race issues. I will be with my fellow artists and watch the blackout on Tuesday to combat racial discrimination and social injustice.” He then added: “I pray that beyond this day we can all work together to overcome this hatred and this division and begin to heal the pain and suffering that everyone feels in the country. We owe it to future generations.”
