Brazil withdrew its bid to host the 2023 Women’s World Cup, after arguing on Monday that it cannot offer FIFA the financial guarantees it needs due to the impact of the coronavirus pandemic. The Brazilian Football Confederation also indicated in a statement that it will support Colombia’s candidacy against Japan’s candidacy and Australia and New Zealand’s joint proposal. South America has never hosted the tournament. A decision is expected to be announced on 25 June. The confederation indicated that President Jair Bolsonaro’s government informed FIFA that it could not offer financial guarantees “due to the scenario of fiscal and economic austerity caused by the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic.” The confederation “understands the cautious stance of the Brazilian government, and other public and private allies, which prevented the formalization of commitments within the time and form required,” the statement added. The Brazilian economy is expected to contract this year by at least 7.4%, according to investment bank Goldman Sachs forecast. The country is most affected by COVID-19 in Latin America, with more than 37,000 confirmed deaths. The governing body of Brazilian football also indicated that the large number of major sporting events they have organized over the past decade could also harm their chances of hosting the Women’s World Cup.
