The world is on alert, while various territories begin to flex their economic activity in the face of the delicate current panorama of the coronavirus pandemic, Mongolia became the first country to declare quarantine for a black plague outbreak. The Mongolian National Center for Zoonotic Diseases (NCZD) reported after laboratory test results that two unidentified people contracted the so-called “groundhog plague” popularly in the Khovd region. In the face of this context, the NCZD provided isolation and monitored those who had contact with the infected. The confinement encompasses the capital of the province and one of the districts of the region, about 500 kilometers south of the southern Siberian republics of Tyva and Altai.
According to the Moscow Times, the victims would be a 27-year-old man and a young woman whose age has not yet been identified, who would have contracted the symptoms by eating a groundhog. For its part, the NCZD detailed samples of 146 people who would have remained in contact with them, and searched 504 individuals for a second contact. It should be remembered that in 2019 a couple died after having the same symptoms as having ingested groundhog meat, considered a delicacy in these lands. Although hunting is prohibited, some consider it good for health.
