translated from Spanish: Acapulco authorities are denounced for spilling wastewater

The National Water Commission (Conagua) filed a complaint with municipal authorities in Acapulco about the wastewater spill at Playa Icacos on June 25.
The complaint is against the Commission of Drinking Water and Sewerage of the Municipality of Acapulco (Capama), for the crime of environmental damage, before the Attorney General’s Office of the Republic.

According to the Conagua, the laboratory results confirmed the environmental damage, after analyzing samples collected in the canal located in Carabela Santa María street; of the six samplings, three were taken on the shoreline and another three to 100 meters offshore.
“The results of the analyses carried out by the Laboratory of the Water Quality Management of the headquarters of Conagua to the samples collected indicate violation to the applicable regulations, so an administrative procedure was initiated against CAPAMA, the body responsible for operating wastewater treatment plants and the sewerage system of the municipality”, the Conagua said in a statement.
“No spills, it’s rainwater” Acapulco
On June 25, social media users posted videos reporting the blackwater spill in Playa Icacos, in the bay of Acapulco.
Although the images showed dark-colored waters reaching the sea, municipal authorities denied that it was sewage, and claimed that it was accumulated rainwater “product of sediments carried from the upper parts of the amphitheatre”.

They even noted that federal authorities, along with those of the municipality, “found that there are no irregularities in collectors or sanitary stations of the paramunicipal body”.
Leonel Galindo González, director general of the Commission of Drinking Water and Sewerage of the Municipality of Acapulco (Capama), said on a supervisory course that “there are no residual discharges, what is happening, I repeat, is rainwater that is lowering everything accumulated during the period of drought, the period of estiaje; it’s lowering it, it’s the first heavy rain in all of Acapulco and here it is, we’re seeing it live.”
According to the municipal authorities, a sand dam prevented the flow of water and when it collapsed, “by the pressure of the strong rain current that was coming down, the ingress of murky water into the bay was observed.”
