“We will probably face the holding of several votes under the threat of covid-19. So we must give the Servel sufficient powers to take the action of the case, without having to be doing a constitutional reform for it every time,” said Senator Alfonso De Urresti, chairman of the Senate Constitution Commission, an instance that currently discusses the draft constitutional reform to deal with the October plebiscite.
De Urresti noted that it is a priority to take all measures to ensure a high call for the constituent plebiscite of 25 October.
“The October vote is probably the most relevant Republican milestone since the return to democracy. It is key to be able to assure citizens that in October they will be able to vote smoothly, with the necessary distances and shelters, to ensure voter participation and health,” the Socialist senator stressed.
Finally, the senator stated that “we will soon agree on a series of proposals, so that at the next session of the Committee on the Constitution we will vote on them in the shortest term, to give the Chileans the certainty that we will have a secure plebiscite in October”.
